“For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” – Luke 4:36

These two words are important. They are repeated throughout the New Testament – The Authority to act and to do what needs to be done, and the Power to accomplish it. It’s easy to believe that Jesus had Power and Authority because He was God—BUT—do you realize that Christ came to restore these to all mankind? That means, to YOU!

We saw Jesus give power and authority to his disciples to do the same things that He did. They cast out demons, healed the sick and spoke with authority. When I was growing up, I would lament that I didn’t get to be there and see Jesus and the disciples do “That Stuff.” I believed that the disciples were the real deal, and they were specially chosen—and I mistakenly thought that what they could do would not be repeated.

What about the 72 in Luke 10? Jesus gave them Power and Authority as well. Then there were others throughout the New Testament. People like Stephen and Paul and some who aren’t even named, who did things with power and authority. Could it be possible that this authority and power were restored to us when we were redeemed?

It definitely has been, but if you don’t know that you have something, you won’t use it, will you? If you have it and discover that you have it but are never taught how to use it, then it will still be useless, or at least poorly utilized. We MUST learn about our Authority and Power that was restored to us, and we must learn how to exercise them well, if we are to be true disciples.
