Do not worry about what to speak. But say whatever is given you at that time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. – Mark 13:11
Have you ever spoken something that was profound and perfectly tailored for the person you were speaking to? You knew it when it came out of your mouth; maybe you were even a little surprised and shocked? Did you feel tempted to pat yourself on the back? Come on – admit it!
What if it wasn’t you? What if the Holy Spirit used you to speak to that person? Jesus gives one context for this happening in this passage, but that is not to say that The Holy Spirit doesn’t speak through whomever He chooses, whenever He chooses.
The first time that I remember thinking that something like that had happened was when I was in Belgium, in college. I was witnessing all summer on the streets, and one evening we were leading a couple to Christ in their home. I was quoting scriptures and speaking things that seemed ‘way beyond my intellect, knowledge or ability to recall or comprehend.
I don’t think that I even knew about this passage at the time, but I told my friends that it didn’t feel like I was myself. I felt like God took over my body, and especially my voice. It is awesome when this happens. I hope that it happens all the time, because I know that The Holy Spirit is a whole lot wiser, and more knowledgeable than I am.
“Lord, feel free to take over as often as You want when I minister, pray for people, or in whatever I’m doing. Amen.”
