I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. – John 14:13-14

Does this verse fit your experience? Come on, let’s be real! I have prayed many times and not received what I asked for. I remember praying for the rapture before exams many times during high school, and I said, “In Jesus’ Name.” As you already know, my prayers went unanswered. OK, seriously, I have prayed many times and not received what I asked for.

Jesus is not a liar. So, what do we do with verses like this? I suggest that you begin by believing that it is true. The key, I believe, is that our faith needs to mature and we need to become developed in our understanding and application of God’s word.

The rest of scripture needs to round out our understanding of any truth. James tells us more about effective prayer. He tells us that we need to pray according to God’s will, and in faith, and from proper motives. It takes faith and maturity.

I’ve seen condemned wells healed to become pure water as a result of prayer. I’ve seen cancers healed as a result of prayer. I’ve seen the impossible happen again and again. You can see these things, too. Believe God’s promises, and learn to mature until they are real in your life.
