“I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” – Luke 5:32 – JESUS

The sad thing in this story is that Jesus was talking to those who thought they were righteous. As a result of their self-righteousness and pride, they missed the greatest opportunity of all time—the opportunity to sit at the feet of the ultimate Rabbi and learn from Him. They missed a chance to be healed themselves, and to have their sins truly forgiven and cleansed.

These men were so focused on being externally righteous that they could not admit, quite possibly could not even know their true spiritual condition. Jesus came for sinners. If you can’t admit and face the reality of your sin, then it is your own loss.

Self-righteousness covers its own self and its own sins. It works hard to look good on the outside, and to never let anyone see what is wrong on the inside. Most of the time the self-righteous are not even able to see the problems within their own selves.

The tragic irony is that in trying to cover themselves they stay uncovered, because they have rejected the help of the one who came to forgive and cleanse us of all unrighteousness.

Don’t be like the religious crowd of Jesus’ day. Be like the sinners who came to Him confessing their desperate need.
