Then Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit. Just then the temple curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks were split apart. – Matthew 27:50-51

Jesus gave up His spirit. Jesus had both his own human spirit as well as the Holy Spirit. At death the spirit part of our being leaves us. No one took Jesus’ life from Him. He gave it up willingly. He gave it in love. I believe Jesus could have given up His spirit at any point. He could have chosen to die without suffering. If anyone could choose the moment of His death, Jesus could. He sustains all things (Col 1). Spiritually, however, Jesus knew that someone had to pay for the sins of all mankind.

We could have paid for our own sin . We deserved to pay—BUT—The Father so loved the world, that He GAVE, his only begotten son. Jesus waited till the full debt of our punishment was paid, gave up His spirit, and then the debt was satisfied.

NOW the veil that separated mankind from Almighty YHWH was torn. The Holy of Holies was now accessible by the blood of the LAMB.

NOW we can enter the throne room of God.

NOW we can call Jesus’ Daddy our DADDY. ABBA! Father!

NOW we have forgiveness of sin and access to eternal life.
