“For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may gain their sight, and the ones who see may become blind.” Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and asked him, “We are not blind too, are we?” Jesus replied, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin, but now because you claim that you can see, your guilt remains.” – John 9:39-41

The greatest tragedy in the lives of these Pharisees is their pride and inability to consider the fact that they may have rejected the very truth they purported to believe and seek. Jesus didn’t fit their denominational box. He wasn’t what they expected. He didn’t fit the pattern that they were looking for.

These men thought they were enlightened. They had studied for their degrees, memorized passages, preached about the Messiah myriad times. NO WAY COULD THEY BE WRONG.

But they were DEAD WRONG. Spiritually, their pride caused them to be so blind that they missed the very God whom they thought they had studied and followed and served. Their blindness led them to kill prophets and now, even the Son of God himself.

LORD, deliver us from spiritual pride and blindness. Open the eyes of those who have studied the scriptures, gotten the degrees but never been able to truly see the things of Your Spirit.
