“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it!” – Luke 13:34

What a tender passage. Here is Jesus, weeping over the city He loves so dearly. His passion for the city is so tender, He equates it with a hen gathering her chicks. That tenderness of affection stands in stark contrast to the other side of the picture.

Jerusalem, the city of God, killed prophets and stoned the messengers sent to her by God. The city did not want God’s tender care. The city rejected God.

How does Christ feel today when a church rejects prophets and people whom God would send to them with a message from the Lord? How does the Lord feel today toward the religious crowd who diligently read and study the Bible, but reject much of the spiritual truth within its pages? I wonder how many believers, churches, and religious organizations the Lord weeps over today?

How many reject His prophets? How many don’t want divine encounters with God because such experiences don’t fit their belief system?
