“Do not worry about how to speak or what to say, for what you should say will be given to you at that time. For it is not you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” – JESUS – Matthew 10:19-20

Jesus promised us that God the Father would speak through us. That He would give us the words. The promise was given in the context of when we are brought to trial and we have to give a defense. I believe that when we live by the Spirit this can become a normal experience.

I often experience this while in ministry. All of a sudden, I know that it is not my words and my thoughts that are coming forth. I’m speaking things that I could not have known, and yet I have total confidence in their accuracy.

Just last week I told a woman whom I had just met about how her mother treated her and specific words that her mother had spoken to her to wound her. These were things that she had never told me. I knew that I was right with greater confidence than if I had been quoting her own words back to her. I told her that the Spirit was revealing this to me.

Throughout the New Testament we are enjoined to be led by the Spirit of God. This should become the norm in our lives. We must learn to listen to the Spirit of God before opening our mouths. Then we can speak what the Spirit gives us to say instead of speaking from our own human understanding and wisdom.
