And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem without knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit warns me in town after town that imprisonment and persecutions are waiting for me. – Acts 20:22-23
Paul had a compulsion. I looked up the word compelled and that is what it means. “OK Paul, it’s time to see a Psychiatrist and get some meds for that.”
NO! This compulsion was by the Holy Spirit. Sometimes when God gives you a task there is nothing and no one that can stop you.
I studied this word when I was working on The God Speaks Bible. I had many dear friends tell me that what I was doing was not of God. They lovingly tried to dissuade me from working on the Bible. Some stopped supporting our ministry. Some cut off communication. I could not help but work on the Bible, even though it cost me greatly.
Paul knew that going to Jerusalem would cost him dearly. He knew that he would face imprisonment and persecution. People warned him. They wept over him and tried to compel him not to go. Prophets prophesied to him of what awaited him, but Paul had to go.
Paul’s compulsion came by the Holy Spirit. Luke, inspired by the Holy Spirit, tells us as much. The Holy Spirit compelled Paul to go, even while warning him of the consequences.
