“What are we doing? For this man is performing many miraculous signs. If we allow him to go on in this way, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away our sanctuary and our nation.” – John 11:48
We really need to watch spiritual jealousy. It was part of the motivation for crucifying Jesus.
Spiritual leaders are especially susceptible to this heinous sin. We don’t realize how wicked it can be.
The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were jealous, because Jesus performed miracles and they couldn’t. In their pride, they figured that God would do these things through them if He were going to do them through anyone, right? So, they reasoned, He must be of the devil.
They were also jealous because many people were believing in Jesus. They actually reasoned that they had to do something with Jesus so that they could protect the sanctuary. If you put yourself in their shoes you realize that they thought they were motivated to do the right thing.
Lord, help us to see our true motives. Free us from spiritual jealousy. Let us not be like those who thought they were doing you a favor when they killed your Son, Jesus.
Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd that stood there and heard the voice said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to him. Jesus said, “This voice has not come for my benefit but for yours. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” – John 12:28-32
