The one speaking in a tongue does not speak to people but to God, for no one understands; he is speaking mysteries by the Spirit. – 1 Cor. 14:2
In the circles that I grew up in, the spiritual gift of tongues got a bad name. I was pretty sure it was of the devil, and that only bad people did it—whatever it was. Now, I am not ashamed to admit that I am one of them. One of those who prays and on occasion speaks in tongues.
Don’t worry, I’m not talking to you when I do it, I am speaking to God. No one understands me when I pray in tongues but God does. The reason tongues has value is because there are many times I only know a limited amount of what needs to be prayed, but God knows everything that must be said. When I run short on what I know to pray God takes over and fills in the gaps.
Let me tell you. I know a lot about prayer. I know a lot about praying effectively, but when it comes to true spiritual knowledge of the details that need to be prayed over anything, GOD KNOWS MORE THAN I DO. Shocking revelation, huh? Of course He does, that is why I let him take over my prayers.
As far as speaking in tongues. I don’t always know what to say, so sometimes God fills my mouth with words in English and sometimes He speaks thru me in a heavenly language – and when that has happened, there has always been someone to interpret. (1 Cor. 14:27-28)
